Dutchman Flat Engagement
There’s something truly magical about a winter engagement shoot, and Dutchman Flat on Mt. Bachelor provided the perfect snowy backdrop for capturing one of my favorite sessions yet. Nestled in the heart of Central Oregon’s breathtaking wilderness, this location boasts panoramic views of snow-covered peaks, frosted trees, and an open expanse of pristine white snow that feels like stepping into a winter wonderland.
The Love Story The couple, Lana and Austin, reached out to me with a vision of a snowy, adventurous engagement shoot that reflected their love for the outdoors. Both avid skiers and hikers, they wanted their session to embody the spirit of their relationship—full of laughter, exploration, and a deep connection to nature. Dutchman Flat, located just outside of Bend, Oregon, was the perfect place to bring their dream session to life.
The Day of the Shoot When we arrived at Dutchman Flat, the landscape was blanketed in fresh snow from a recent storm. The sky was a soft gray, and snowflakes gently fell throughout the session, adding an extra layer of romance to the photos. Lana and Austin arrived dressed perfectly for the occasion. Lana wore a flowing deep emerald-green dress paired with a cozy white shawl, and Austin’s classic wool coat and scarf gave him a timeless look that complemented the scenery beautifully.
Capturing the Magic We began the session near the edge of the treeline, where the towering pines created a stunning contrast against the bright snow. Lana and Austin held hands, exchanged laughter, and shared quiet moments that felt completely natural. Their chemistry was undeniable, and it was a joy to capture those candid, heartfelt moments.
As we ventured further into the flat, the open expanse allowed us to showcase the dramatic views of Mt. Bachelor in the background. The couple’s adventurous spirit shone as they playfully threw snow at each other, creating moments of pure joy that translated beautifully into the photos. One of my favorite shots of the day was of them walking hand-in-hand through the snow, leaving a trail of footprints behind them with the majestic mountain towering in the distance.
A Few Tips for Winter Engagement Shoots Photographing in the snow can be challenging but also incredibly rewarding. Here are a few tips from this shoot:
Dress for Warmth and Style: Lana and Austin layered up under their outfits, which kept them comfortable without sacrificing style. Encouraging clients to bring warm layers is essential for winter sessions.
Bring Props: A plaid blanket, thermos of hot cocoa, or even snowshoes can add fun and cozy elements to the shoot.
Be Flexible: Winter weather can be unpredictable. Having a backup plan and staying patient with the elements will ensure a successful session.
Time It Right: The soft light on overcast winter days is perfect for even, flattering photos, but golden hour in the snow—if the sun makes an appearance—can create incredible warm tones against the cool landscape.
Final Thoughts Lana and Austin’s Dutchman Flat engagement shoot was a perfect reminder of why I love winter sessions. The combination of stunning scenery, a wonderful couple, and the unique charm of snow-covered landscapes made this day unforgettable. If you’re considering a winter engagement shoot, Dutchman Flat offers a serene and awe-inspiring location that highlights the best of Central Oregon’s natural beauty.
